Is the Ajax Doorbell right for your install?
Harbro stocks numerous other doorbells across the wireless and wired ranges. Here's where Ajax fits against each.
Ajax vs the budget options
Neither the Knightsbridge DC010 nor the Byron 720K has a camera at all - they're a push-and-chime pairing, wireless or hardwired, with no AI, no app, no video. If the job only needs to alert someone that a visitor's at the door, either is a fraction of the price. Ajax is the right upgrade when the job needs to see who's there, get a notification, or hold footage as evidence.
Ajax vs the mid-range video doorbells
Ener-J Smart Flexi, EZVIZ CS-DB1C/KIT and Dahua VDKP01-BG sit in a band around £49 to £70, wired or battery, 1080p to 2K, motion detection. Ajax's built-in AI classification, distinguishing people, animals and vehicles before alerting rather than triggering on any motion, is the meaningful difference over the passive-IR-only detection those three rely on, which is what causes false alerts from passing cars or next door's cat. Ajax also runs on a continuous AC/DC supply with backup battery, rather than the battery-charging cycle of Ener-J and EZVIZ or being fully dependent on mains like Dahua.
No included chime
Every other doorbell in the range comes with some form of chime - Knightsbridge's kit, Ener-J's USB chime, Dahua's Wi-Fi chime. Ajax doesn't. It alerts through the Ajax app, or through a compatible Ajax siren if you're running an Ajax alarm system as a chime substitute. Worth knowing before ordering, particularly if the expectation is a traditional audible doorbell sound rather than an app notification.
Which finish?
White and Black are the same doorbell, same specification, same price. The choice is purely which finish suits the door and surrounding brick or render.
Installation and positioning
The manufacturer's recommended mounting height is 1.2 to 1.5m (4 to 5ft). The Ajax Doorbell is designed for both indoor and outdoor use, but shouldn't be mounted in direct sunlight - prolonged exposure can cause the unit to overheat.
As a hardwired AC/DC device, connecting it to a mains-fed power supply, or bypassing an existing chime circuit using the included BellKit, falls under the same Part P considerations as any other hardwired video doorbell installation. See our full doorbell installation guide for wiring steps, transformer sizing and Part P guidance.
