LED candle bulb buying guide

The LED candle bulb has become the standard lamp for decorative fittings in UK homes and commercial installations, replacing incandescent and halogen candle lamps while using a fraction of the energy. The candle shape (typically the C35 profile) is a functional design choice as much as a decorative one: the tapered form fits the shallow lamp holders in chandeliers and multi-arm ceiling fittings where a GLS or globe bulb would not. Three decisions cover most candle bulb purchases: which fitting you need, which colour temperature suits the room, and whether the circuit uses a dimmer switch.

Fitting types: E14 (SES), E27 and B22

Candle bulbs are available in three fitting types commonly found in UK installations. The fitting code is stamped or printed on the inside of the lamp holder in the fitting, or on the box of the original bulb being replaced. If the existing lamp is still in the socket, the code is also moulded into the base of the bulb itself.

Fitting code UK trade name Connector type Typical applications Harbro stock
E14 SES (Small Edison Screw) 14 mm screw thread Chandeliers, crystal pendants, multi-arm wall lights, decorative ceiling fittings 3 variants, from £1.75 ex VAT
E27 ES (Large Edison Screw) 27 mm screw thread Statement single pendants, table lamps, decorative ceiling fittings 2 variants, from £1.27 ex VAT
B22 BC (Bayonet Cap) Push-and-twist bayonet Standard UK domestic lamp holders, ceiling roses, bedside lamps, floor lamps 1 variant at £1.39 ex VAT

E14 and SES are the same fitting. E14 is the IEC European designation based on the 14 mm thread diameter; SES is the UK trade name for the identical connector. If a fitting specification, the fitting's instruction leaflet, or an online product listing says “SES candle bulb”, an E14 candle bulb will fit it. This is the most common source of confusion when ordering decorative candle lamps, particularly for chandeliers sourced from European suppliers that label lamp holders with the E14 code rather than SES. Similarly, B22 and BC refer to the same bayonet cap fitting used across most UK domestic ceiling roses and pendant lamp holders.

Warm white or cool white candle bulbs?

Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin (K). Lower values produce a warmer, more amber light; higher values produce a crisper, bluer-white output. For decorative candle applications, two colour temperatures account for the majority of purchases:

  • 2700K (warm white) is the closest match to a traditional incandescent candle lamp and the default choice for chandeliers, crystal pendant fittings, wall lights, living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms. All three E14 variants, both E27 options and the B22 variant in this range include a 2700K warm white option.
  • 4000K (cool white) produces a neutral, slightly blue-white output suited to kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and modern fittings where colour accuracy or clean visibility matters more than atmosphere. 4000K dimmable filament glass candle bulbs are available in E14 and E27 fittings.

If you are replacing existing incandescent or halogen candle lamps in a chandelier or decorative fitting, 2700K is the safe like-for-like colour match. Mixing colour temperatures across lamps in the same multi-arm fitting will be visibly noticeable at close range, which matters in exposed lamp applications.

Dimmable LED candle bulbs

Not every LED candle bulb is dimmable, and fitting a non-dimmable LED to a dimmer circuit causes flicker, humming from the dimmer module, and premature bulb failure. The dimmable candle bulbs in this range, including the E14 2700K and 4000K filament glass variants and the E27 4000K omni filament option, are compatible with mainstream UK trailing-edge LED dimmers.

If you are replacing halogen candle lamps that were previously on a rotary or push-button leading-edge dimmer, factor in a dimmer switch upgrade. Leading-edge dimmers were designed for the resistive load profile of halogen bulbs and often misbehave with the capacitive load of LED drivers, even on dimmable LEDs. A trailing-edge LED-compatible dimmer is a minor additional cost against the inconvenience of persistent flicker. The B22 candle bulb currently stocked is non-dimmable and is suited to standard on/off circuits only.

Standard candle bulbs versus filament glass candle bulbs

Five of the six candle bulbs in this collection are filament glass types: clear or minimally tinted glass-bodied lamps with visible LED filaments inside, designed to replicate the appearance of a traditional incandescent lamp. In decorative chandeliers, crystal pendants and wall lights where the lamp is visible rather than concealed behind a diffuser, the filament glass body is part of the intended aesthetic. Frosted or standard candle bulbs conceal the light source behind a diffuse coating and are better suited to enclosed fittings or lamp holders where the bulb is not on direct display.

The single standard (non-filament) candle lamp in this range is the Integral LED Candle E27 2700K Non-Dimmable, which provides a cost-effective warm white option for applications where the lamp finish is not a priority.

Compatible fittings at Harbro

The following ranges from the Harbro decorative lighting collection all use E14 (SES) candle bulbs and are available to order alongside this lamp range:

Trade buyers: chandelier and multi-arm project quantities

A 12-arm chandelier takes 12 candle bulbs. A pair of 5-arm wall lights takes another 10. For new-build and refurbishment projects where candle lamps are needed in volume across multiple fittings and rooms, talk to us about box-quantity pricing. Most of our LED candle bulb stock moves through the counter and on trade accounts to electricians across Peterlee, Sunderland, Hartlepool and the wider North East. We also ship trade orders UK-wide on next-working-day. Call 0191 5181998 or email sales@harbroelectrical.co.uk.

Why buy LED candle bulbs from Harbro Electrical? Harbro is an independent electrical wholesaler founded in 1994, based at our trade counter and warehouse in Peterlee, County Durham. Decorative candle bulbs are among our highest-volume lamp lines, which means we keep consistent stock depth across all fitting types and colour temperatures rather than relying on infrequent bulk orders. We supply trade contractors, facilities teams, housebuilders and commercial fit-out companies across the UK, and our team can advise on fitting compatibility, dimmer switch pairing and specification questions that a web listing cannot answer.

LED candle bulbs: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between E14 and SES candle bulbs?

E14 and SES (Small Edison Screw) are the same fitting. E14 is the IEC European designation based on the 14 mm screw thread diameter; SES is the traditional UK trade name for the identical connector. If a chandelier, wall light or pendant fitting is labelled as taking an SES candle bulb, an E14 candle bulb will fit it directly. The two terms appear interchangeably on product packaging, fitting instruction sheets and trade literature, which is the main source of confusion when ordering. The Harbro E14 candle bulb range covers three variants from £1.75 ex VAT in warm white, cool white, dimmable and non-dimmable options.

Why do LED candles flicker, and how do I stop it?

Standard LED candle bulbs do not flicker under normal operating conditions. Flickering is almost always caused by one of two issues: a non-dimmable LED candle bulb fitted to a dimmer circuit, or a dimmable LED candle bulb fitted to an older leading-edge dimmer that was designed for halogen loads and is incompatible with low-wattage LED drivers. The fix for the first case is to swap to a dimmable LED candle bulb. The fix for the second is to also replace the dimmer with a trailing-edge LED-compatible model. If a dimmable LED candle bulb on a compatible trailing-edge dimmer still flickers at very low brightness settings, adjusting the dimmer’s minimum load trim will usually resolve it.

Purpose-built flame effect LED bulbs that deliberately simulate a flickering candle are a separate product type and are not included in this collection.

Are LED candle bulbs dimmable?

Some are and some are not, and it is specified per product. In this collection, dimmable variants are available in E14 (SES) in both 2700K and 4000K, and in E27 in 4000K. The B22 candle bulb and the E27 2700K non-dimmable option are intended for standard on/off switch circuits only. Always check the product specification before ordering. Fitting a non-dimmable LED candle bulb to a dimmer circuit will cause flicker and can shorten lamp life, but fitting a dimmable candle bulb to a standard non-dimmable circuit is fine and will operate as a fixed lamp without any issue.

What colour temperature should I choose for candle bulbs?

For decorative chandeliers, crystal pendants and wall lights where the lamp contributes to room atmosphere, 2700K warm white is the standard choice. It closely matches the amber tone of a traditional incandescent candle lamp and is the colour temperature specified by most fitting manufacturers for their recommended replacement lamp. For kitchens, bathrooms or modern fittings where a cleaner, crisper output is preferred, 4000K cool white is the correct choice. Both colour temperatures are available in E14 and E27 fittings. Avoid mixing colour temperatures within the same multi-arm fitting: the difference in appearance between adjacent lamps running at different Kelvin values is clearly visible and will look unintentional.

What is the difference between E14, E27 and B22 fittings?

E14 (SES) carries a 14 mm screw thread and is the standard lamp socket in chandeliers, crystal pendants, multi-arm wall lights and most decorative fittings of European origin. It is the most common candle bulb fitting across the Harbro decorative lighting range. E27 (ES, Large Edison Screw) has a wider 27 mm thread and is used in statement single pendants and table lamps where the candle shape provides a decorative element in an exposed lamp position. B22 (BC, Bayonet Cap) uses a push-and-twist fitting and is the standard cap type in the majority of UK domestic lamp holders, including ceiling roses, bedside lamps and floor lamps. The fitting code is usually printed or moulded on the inside of the lamp holder or on the base of the existing bulb.

What is a filament glass candle bulb?

A filament glass candle bulb is an LED candle lamp with a clear glass envelope and visible internal LED filaments, designed to replicate the appearance of a traditional incandescent candle lamp. The glass body and the glowing filament are both part of the aesthetic in fittings where the lamp is exposed rather than concealed behind a shade or diffuser. Five of the six candle bulbs stocked by Harbro are filament glass types. The remaining option is a standard frosted lamp suited to enclosed fittings where the lamp body is hidden. Filament glass candle bulbs are available in dimmable and non-dimmable variants, and in 2700K warm white and 4000K cool white, across E14 and E27 fittings.

Can I replace halogen candle lamps directly with LED candle bulbs?

Yes. LED candle bulbs in E14, E27 and B22 fittings are designed as direct retrofit replacements for halogen candle lamps in the same fitting. The lamp holder and wiring do not need to be modified. LED candle bulbs run on the same 230V mains supply as the halogen lamps they replace and draw no transformer. A 3.4W LED candle bulb replaces a 25W to 35W halogen candle with comparable light output at approximately 90% less energy consumption. If the fitting was previously on a leading-edge rotary dimmer, replacing both the lamp and the dimmer switch at the same time is advisable to avoid compatibility issues.
