The installation method depends entirely on the doorbell type. There are three distinct paths.

Wired doorbells use a low-voltage transformer (typically 8-12V AC) connected to the mains at one end and to a bell wire circuit running to a chime and push button at the other. Reliable, no battery changes, and the standard for new-build and retrofit installations where wiring is practical.

Wireless (battery/RF) doorbells require no electrical work. The push button runs on batteries, transmits a radio signal to a plug-in or battery-powered chime receiver, and the whole system installs in under fifteen minutes without touching any wiring.

Video and smart doorbells are a hybrid. Some run entirely on battery. Others hardwire into an existing doorbell transformer circuit - but they need a higher transformer specification (8-24V AC, 10-40VA) than a standard bell transformer provides, and usually require the existing mechanical chime to be bypassed.

How to Install a Wired Doorbell

Switch off the circuit at the consumer unit. Verify it is dead with a voltage tester before you touch any wiring. The transformer's low-voltage output side - the bell wire, chime and push button - is extra-low-voltage and not notifiable. The mains connection to the transformer is notifiable work under Part P (see the regulations section below).

  1. Isolate and verify. Switch off the doorbell circuit at the consumer unit or the relevant MCB. Use a voltage tester or multimeter to confirm the transformer's mains supply is dead before proceeding.

  2. Check the transformer. Locate it - typically in a meter cupboard, under the stairs, in a loft, or integrated into the chime body. Read the output voltage from the label (8V AC or 12V AC for a standard chime). Confirm the actual output with a multimeter set to AC volts: a reading within 10% of the rated voltage is acceptable.

  3. Plan the cable route. Map the run from transformer output terminals to the chime position (inside the hallway at approximately 1.5m height), then from the chime to the external push button. Keep runs short and avoid proximity to mains cabling where possible.

  4. Mount the chime. Fix the chime body to the wall at approximately 1.5m, level. Remove the cover to expose the terminals, typically labelled Trans (transformer), Front (front push button) and Rear (second button, if fitted).

  5. Mount the push button. Position at 1.2-1.4m on the door frame or adjacent masonry. Drill a hole through the wall or frame for the bell wire, angled slightly downward on the outside face to shed rainwater. Fix the button body and leave the wiring connection until the cable is run.

  6. Run the bell wire and connect. Run 0.5mm twin-core bell wire from the transformer output terminals to the Trans terminal on the chime. Run a second pair from the Front terminal to the push button. Strip approximately 10mm of insulation and connect to terminals. Polarity is not critical on an AC bell circuit. Clip the cable at 300mm intervals.

  7. Connect the transformer output. Connect the bell wire from the chime's Trans terminal to the transformer's output terminals. If the transformer is already wired to the mains, the mains side should remain isolated until a qualified electrician has verified the connection.

  8. Restore power and test. Switch the circuit back on. Press the push button. A clean tone confirms correct installation. A buzzing or humming sound usually indicates a voltage mismatch or an un-bypassed chime on a video doorbell circuit.

  9. Finish. Seal the external cable entry point with exterior-grade silicone sealant. Secure exposed cable runs with PVC clips. Replace the chime cover.

Doorbell Transformers Explained: Voltage, VA and Choosing the Right Unit

The transformer is the most commonly misspecified part of a doorbell installation. Choosing the wrong one is the primary cause of chimes that buzz, video doorbells that report insufficient power, and damaged smart doorbells.

Standard wired chime transformers output 8V AC or 12V AC at 4-8VA. The load is momentary - the chime only draws current for the fraction of a second the button is pressed. A 4VA transformer is sufficient for a single chime on a short cable run.

Video and smart doorbells draw power continuously. The camera, Wi-Fi radio, processor, LED ring and battery trickle-charge run without interruption. A standard 8V/4VA bell transformer cannot supply this load. Most video doorbells specify a minimum of 8-24V AC at 10-40VA.

When a transformer upgrade triggers Part P. In England and Wales, any work that introduces a new mains-connected device - including replacing a transformer if it requires a new fused spur, junction box, or consumer unit connection - is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. How to Install a Wireless Doorbell

  1. Check the range. Manufacturer range figures are measured in open space. Each solid internal wall reduces effective range by approximately 20% or more. Concrete, steel-framed or thick stone buildings reduce range significantly further. Walk the route from the button position to the chime position before committing to fixing locations.

  2. Fit the push button. Position at 1.2-1.4m on the door frame or wall. Avoid mounting directly on or beside a metal surface - metallic surfaces absorb and reflect RF signals, reducing range and reliability. Fix with screws or the supplied adhesive pad.

  3. Position the chime receiver. Plug into a mains socket or fix to a wall (battery models) at a central indoor location. Height is less critical than proximity to the occupant's usual positions within the property.

  4. Pair the units. Most wireless doorbells are factory-paired and work immediately. If not, press the learn/pair button on the chime receiver, then press the push button to register it. Consult the specific product instructions as the process varies between products.

  5. Select tone and volume. Most wireless chimes offer multiple tones and a volume control. Set to the level appropriate for the property and the number of rooms.

  6. Test. Press the push button with the door closed. Confirm the chime sounds inside the property. If it does not, move the chime receiver closer to the button or away from other 433MHz devices such as baby monitors, remote-controlled plug sockets or some car key fobs.

Installing a Video or Smart Doorbell

The installation route depends on whether the video doorbell is battery-powered or hardwired.

Battery video doorbells

Install exactly like a wireless doorbell - mount the button, connect to the app over Wi-Fi, and recharge the battery periodically (typically every one to three months depending on motion activity levels). No electrical work required.

Hardwired video doorbells

Connect to an existing wired doorbell circuit. Before installation, confirm the existing transformer's output voltage and VA rating match the video doorbell's requirements. Most basic video doorbells run from 8V upwards; Pro-class models need 16-24V AC and significantly more VA than a standard bell transformer provides. If the existing transformer is underpowered, replace it before installing the doorbell. The mains side of that replacement is Part P work.

Chime bypass

Most hardwired video doorbells require the existing mechanical chime to be bypassed. The doorbell needs a steady, uninterrupted power supply; a mechanical chime circuit interrupts that supply each time the button is pressed, causing instability. Most manufacturers supply a small bypass kit - sometimes called a Pro Power Kit or jumper connector. Fit it across the chime terminals (typically Trans and Front) to complete the circuit continuously, then configure the doorbell's app to use an internal digital chime or a compatible Wi-Fi chime instead.

Wi-Fi and positioning

Video doorbells need a strong 2.4GHz Wi-Fi signal at the front door. Measure signal strength at the installation point before fixing permanently. A Wi-Fi extender or mesh node positioned near the front door resolves weak-signal issues in most properties.

GDPR and camera positioning

A doorbell camera that captures images beyond the property boundary - including public pavements, neighbouring driveways or adjacent gardens - must comply with UK GDPR and the ICO's guidance on domestic CCTV. Not notifiable - competent homeowner or trade electrician, no certification required:

  • All work on the extra-low-voltage side of the transformer: running bell wire, connecting the chime, wiring the push button
  • Replacing a like-for-like chime or push button
  • Installing a wireless (battery) or battery-powered video doorbell
  • Replacing an existing transformer by unplugging it from a socket or removing it from a plug-in FCU, provided no new wiring is involved

Notifiable under Part P (England and Wales) - must be certified by a registered competent person:

  • Any work on the mains wiring side of the transformer

Troubleshooting Common Doorbell Problems

Chime buzzes or hums instead of ringing

Usually a voltage mismatch - typically a 12V chime running off an 8V transformer, or a video doorbell connected to an under-rated transformer. Check the transformer output voltage with a multimeter and compare against the chime or video doorbell's specification.

Video doorbell shows insufficient power or low-power warnings

The transformer VA rating is insufficient. Replace with a continuous-rated transformer at the video doorbell's minimum specified voltage and VA. A standard 8V/4VA bell transformer will not reliably power any hardwired video doorbell.

Wireless doorbell does not sound

Check the battery in the push button first. If the battery is good, confirm the chime receiver is within range. Move the receiver closer to the button. Avoid positioning the push button adjacent to metal surfaces or other 433MHz devices.

Doorbell rings randomly or false-activates

On wireless models, nearby devices on the 433MHz band (including remote controls, garage door openers and some smart plugs) can trigger the chime. Try changing the tone/channel on the receiver. On video doorbells, adjust the PIR motion sensitivity zone in the app.

No power to the transformer

Check the fuse in the FCU feeding the transformer. If intact, verify the mains supply at the FCU is live with a voltage tester. If the transformer has an integrated plug, check the socket is functioning.
