The G9 LED bulb has replaced the halogen G9 capsule as the default choice for decorative fittings across the UK. A G9 is a 230V mains-voltage bulb with two looped pins spaced 9mm apart that push directly into the lampholder, with no transformer needed. The switch from halogen to LED gives roughly 85% energy saving, around ten times the lifespan, and almost no radiant heat, which makes a significant difference when a chandelier holds twelve of them.
This guide covers what to look for when ordering G9 LED bulbs, the warm-white versus cool-white decision, dimmable compatibility, and the fittings G9 lamps are typically specified for.
Wattage, lumens and halogen replacement
Halogen G9 bulbs were typically 25W, 33W or 40W. Their LED equivalents draw a fraction of that wattage while producing comparable light output:

For chandeliers and multi-lamp pendants, lumens matter more than wattage. A 12-arm fitting with 200-lumen capsules delivers substantial cumulative light. Match the bulb to the room: kitchens and bathrooms benefit from higher-output 4.4W variants, while bedrooms and hallways usually suit the 1.8W to 2.7W capsules.
Warm white vs cool white G9 LED
Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin (K). G9 LED bulbs are most commonly stocked in three temperatures:
- 2200K (extra warm white) produces an amber, candle-like light used to mimic vintage filament or create decorative atmosphere. Bell Lighting’s 61042 and 61044 sit here.
- 2700K (warm white) is the closest match to traditional halogen and the default choice for living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms and most decorative pendant lighting.
- 4000K (cool white) produces a neutral, slightly blue-white light specified for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and commercial applications where colour accuracy matters.
If you are replacing existing halogens, 2700K is the safe like-for-like swap. Mixing colour temperatures in the same fitting will be visibly noticeable and is something our team would advise against.
Dimmable G9 LED bulbs
Not every G9 LED is dimmable, and fitting a non-dimmable LED on a dimmer circuit causes flicker, premature failure, and occasionally audible buzzing from the dimmer module. Every dimmable G9 in this collection, including the Bell 61042, 61043, 61044 and 61045 series and the Integral ILG9DC011, ILG9DC014, ILG9DC021 and ILG9DE022, works with mainstream UK trailing-edge LED dimmers. If you are replacing an old rotary dimmer that previously controlled halogens, factor in a dimmer upgrade at the same time, as older leading-edge dimmers often misbehave with low-wattage LED loads.
Common fittings and compatible products
G9 LED capsules are the standard lamp for most decorative fittings sold in the UK. The ranges below all take G9 bulbs and are available through Harbro:
