Choosing Your Finish

Polished Chrome or French Gold?

Both finishes use identical K9 crystal components and G9 lamp configurations. The frame colour determines the warmth and character of the light.

Polished Chrome

Cool, high-contrast silver finish. Emphasises the clarity and sparkle of the K9 crystal. The chrome reflects the crystal at full brightness, giving the sharpest prismatic effect. Works in contemporary, minimalist and modern-classic interiors. The most popular Byrne finish for dining rooms and hotel lobbies.

French Gold

Warm antique-gold finish. Softens the crystal light into a warmer, amber-tinted glow. Suits traditional, transitional and warm-toned interiors including period properties, hotel rooms and formal living rooms. Pairs well with warm white G9 LED capsules at 2700K to 3000K. The semi-flush and ceiling formats in French gold are the most widely used Byrne products in hospitality settings.

About Byrne

Multi-Arm K9 Crystal Chandeliers: the Byrne Telescopic Design

The Byrne Telescopic Chandelier by Harbro Lighting is a multi-arm ceiling fitting built on a tiered central framework. Slim metal stems radiate outward at erratic angles from that frame, each carrying a disc of clear K9 crystal around a G9 lamp holder. When lit, the effect is a three-dimensional cluster of floating crystal that catches and refracts light in multiple directions at once.

K9 crystal is a high-clarity optical glass with a refractive index close to lead crystal but without the weight. Each disc is positioned so the light from the G9 capsule lamp passes through all facets, throwing spectrums across walls and ceiling. The effect is most pronounced when the fitting is dimmed, as the ambient level drops and each crystal disc throws a more defined prismatic scatter.

The Telescopic range runs from a compact 3-light in 570mm diameter through to a statement 8-light at 870mm diameter. All share the same 570mm to 870mm adjustable drop, making them suitable for standard 2.4m to 3.0m ceilings. Available in polished chrome and French gold. All Byrne fittings carry a 1-year warranty and are rated IP20 for dry indoor use.

Where to Use a Crystal Chandelier

Room-by-Room Placement Guide

Crystal chandeliers work best where the prismatic effect can be appreciated at multiple angles. These are the most effective placements for the Byrne range.

Dining Room

Over the Dining Table

The Byrne sphere pendant is most effective when used over a dining table, where the crystal effect can be seen from all seated positions. Centre the pendant over the table with the bottom of the fitting 750mm to 900mm above the surface. Use on a dimmer: at lower settings the prismatic effect of the K9 crystal is more visible and creates a stronger ambient mood.

Hallway

Entrance Hall and Staircase

A crystal chandelier makes an immediate impression in an entrance hall. The Byrne 50cm sphere has a maximum drop of 2,040mm, which covers double-height halls and stairwells effectively. The crystal scatters light at multiple angles from a single central point, which works well in tall spaces where a standard pendant would feel underwhelming.

Living Room

Living and Sitting Rooms

In a living room, the Byrne semi-flush or ceiling versions work well where pendant drop clearance is limited. For standard 2.4m ceilings, the semi-flush format keeps the fitting flush enough to avoid head clearance issues while retaining the full crystal cluster effect. The French gold finish suits period and traditional interiors; polished chrome suits contemporary and open-plan spaces.

Hotel and Hospitality

Commercial and Hospitality Use

The Byrne range is regularly specified in hotel rooms, bars, restaurants and reception areas. The French gold semi-flush format is the most commonly used Byrne product in hospitality settings, as it provides strong crystal character without requiring high ceiling clearance. All Byrne fittings meet Class 1 protection requirements and are suitable for commercial installations.

Sizing and Installation

Ceiling Height and Drop Guide

All Byrne Telescopic Chandeliers share the same adjustable drop: 570mm minimum to 870mm maximum. Diameter varies by lamp count: 570mm (3-light), 670mm (5-light), 870mm (8-light).

Ceiling height Suggested drop (over table) Notes
2.4m standard 570mm to 700mm Works well across all three Telescopic sizes. All three keep the fitting comfortably above head height when standing.
2.7m 650mm to 800mm More drop available. The crystal effect is enhanced when the fitting sits a little lower in the room.
3.0m and above 800mm to 870mm (maximum) The Telescopic range reaches its maximum 870mm drop, keeping the correct 700-900mm table-to-fitting distance.
Choosing by room size 3-light for smaller rooms, 8-light for larger The 570mm 3-light suits a dining room or bedroom. The 870mm 8-light works well as a statement piece in a larger hallway or open-plan living area.
All Byrne Telescopic Chandeliers are ceiling-hung fittings. The heaviest in this range, the 8-light, has a net weight of 5.1kg. Always confirm the ceiling rose and backplate can support the fitting weight before installation. Connection must be carried out by a qualified electrician.
Lamps and Bulbs

Which Bulbs Work in a Byrne Crystal Chandelier?

All Byrne Telescopic Chandeliers use G9 capsule bulbs. No lamps are included.

Dimmable G9 LED Capsules for Crystal Effect

For the Byrne range, dimmable G9 LED capsules are strongly recommended. The prismatic crystal effect is most pronounced when the lamp is dimmed to 20 to 40% of full output, as the surrounding ambient light drops and the refracted crystal light becomes visible. Warm white G9 LEDs at 2700K to 3000K are the standard choice for both chrome and gold Byrne fittings. The Byrne takes up to 10W per G9 position; using lower-wattage dimmable LEDs reduces heat within the crystal cluster.

Cool White vs Warm White G9

Cool white G9 LEDs at 4000K to 6500K maximise the spectral spread of the K9 crystal, producing a sharper rainbow effect at prismatic edges. Warm white at 2700K to 3000K produces softer amber-tinted spectral throws that suit dining and living room environments. For polished chrome Byrne fittings, both cool and warm white work. For French gold fittings, warm white is the more cohesive choice as the gold frame and warm lamp temperature produce a unified amber glow rather than a colour contrast.

Frequently Asked

Crystal Chandeliers: Common Questions

What is a crystal chandelier?

A crystal chandelier is a ceiling light fitting that uses faceted crystal components to refract and scatter light, creating a sparkling prismatic effect. Modern crystal chandeliers like the Harbro Lighting Byrne range use K9 optical crystal discs on slim metal stems, combining the light-scattering quality of traditional cut crystal with a contemporary geometric frame available in polished chrome or French gold.

What type of crystal does the Byrne range use?

The Byrne range uses K9 crystal, a high-clarity optical glass with a refractive index close to lead crystal but without the weight or regulatory restrictions of lead content. Each disc is clear and positioned so the light from the G9 capsule lamp passes through all facets, throwing spectrums across the walls and ceiling. The K9 crystal in the Byrne range is produced to a consistent standard across all products in the collection.

Is the Byrne crystal chandelier dimmable?

Yes. All Byrne Telescopic Chandeliers are dimmable, but require both dimmable G9 LED capsule lamps and a compatible dimmer switch, neither of which is included. Using a dimmer is strongly recommended for the Byrne range: the crystal prismatic effect is most visible at lower output levels, where the ambient light level drops and each K9 disc throws a more defined spectrum across the room.

What is the difference between polished chrome and French gold?

The frame finish is the only structural difference. Polished chrome gives a cool, high-contrast silver finish that emphasises the clarity and white sparkle of the K9 crystal. French gold gives a warm antique-gold finish that softens the light into a more amber-tinted glow. Both finishes use identical K9 crystal components and the same G9 lamp configurations. The polished chrome versions are the more widely specified of the two for contemporary and modern-classic interiors; French gold suits traditional and period settings.

What ceiling height do I need for a Byrne crystal chandelier?

The Byrne Telescopic Chandeliers have a minimum drop of 570mm and a maximum drop of 870mm, making them well suited to standard 2.4m to 3.0m ceilings. Over a dining table or in a hallway, the bottom of the fitting should sit 700mm to 900mm above the surface below. The drop is adjustable within this range.
