Clear, Smoked or Amber Glass?
The brass frame and G9 lamp configuration are identical across all three glass options. The glass determines the light quality and the mood of the room.
Clear Glass
Maximum light output. Shows the brass frame and lamp at full brightness. The sharpest and most contemporary look in the range. Works in any room. Best with G9 LED capsule bulbs for a clean, consistent output.
Smoked Glass
Diffused output, reduced glare. Creates a moody, layered effect. Works particularly well in dining rooms and living areas where you want a softer light in the evening. The brass frame reads through the smoke with a warmer tone.
Amber Glass
The warmest output of the three. The amber tint deepens the brass tone and casts a golden glow. Works especially well with filament or Edison-style LED bulbs. The most characterful option for kitchen, bar and dining schemes.

About Melville
Geometric Brass Design by Harbro Lighting
The Melville collection is built around a distinctive hollow-diamond geometric frame. A structure of open diamonds encircles the lamp positions, giving the fitting strong visual character without enclosing the light source. The brass finish adds warmth to the metalwork without veering into antique territory.
One of the range's design features is its dual-application glass configuration. The mixture of long and short glass pieces creates two distinct visual reads depending on viewing angle, adding depth and movement to a hanging fitting.
Melville is available in three frame colours: brass, polished nickel and satin black. All share the same frame design, so a mixed-finish scheme is possible for designers who want to run the same form through a space in contrasting metals. The adjustable cable drop means the fitting works in a 2.4m kitchen as well as a double-height hallway or stairwell.
Room-by-Room Guide
Brass works across both traditional and contemporary interiors. These are the most common placements and the key considerations for each.
Over a Kitchen Island or Breakfast Bar
The most popular placement for brass pendants. Mount 700mm to 900mm above the worktop surface. For an island up to 900mm wide, the 40cm Melville round pendant gives sufficient spread. For wider islands over 1.8m, two pendants spaced equally is the usual approach, or use the 1m 32-light variant as a single centrepiece.
Over a Dining Table
Centre the pendant over the table with the bottom of the fitting 750mm to 850mm above the table surface. The smoked or amber glass reduces glare at seated eye level while still lighting the table adequately. Dimming is strongly recommended in dining rooms.
Entrance Hall and Hallway
A brass pendant makes an immediate first impression in an entrance hall. In a standard 2.4m hallway, keep the bottom of the fitting above 2.0m for passing clearance. In a double-height hall or stairwell, the Melville's maximum 1,690mm drop gives significant design flexibility.
Living and Sitting Rooms
Brass works in both traditional and contemporary living rooms. Clear glass reads modern; amber reads warm and period-friendly. Position over a coffee table or reading corner for a considered placement rather than centred on the ceiling where furniture may move. Confirm IP20 is appropriate: the Melville is not suitable for wet areas.
Ceiling Height and Drop Guide
Ceiling Height and Drop Guide
The Melville 40cm round pendant has an adjustable cable: minimum drop 400mm, maximum drop 1,690mm from ceiling rose to bottom of fitting.
Which Bulbs Work in a Melville Brass Pendant?
The Melville round pendant uses G9 capsule bulbs. The single sphere pendant uses E27. No lamps are included with any Melville fitting.
G9 LED Capsule Bulbs
The most energy-efficient option for the Melville G9 round pendants. G9 LED capsules are available in warm white (2700K) and cool white (4000K). Warm white complements the brass frame and is the most popular choice. Dimmable G9 LED capsules are required if you want to use the fitting on a dimmer circuit. The Melville takes up to 10W per G9 lamp position.
Filament and Edison-Style LED Bulbs
For the single E27 Melville sphere pendant, filament-style LEDs (GLS A60, ST64) make the lamp part of the aesthetic. Vintage filament LEDs at 2200K to 2700K suit the amber glass version particularly well, deepening the golden glow. Standard E27 screw fitting. Decorative filament lamps are available separately from Harbro Electrical.
Frequently Asked
Brass Pendant Lights: Common Questions
What is a brass pendant light?
What is a brass pendant light?
A brass pendant light is a ceiling fitting with a brass-finished metal frame, suspended from the ceiling by a cable or rod. Brass finishes range from polished to satin and antique, and suit both traditional and contemporary interiors. The Melville range by Harbro Lighting uses a geometric hollow-diamond brass frame available with clear, smoked or amber glass in a 10-light or 32-light round format, or as a single E27 sphere pendant.
What bulbs do Melville brass pendant lights use?
What bulbs do Melville brass pendant lights use?
The Melville round pendants (10-light and 32-light G9 versions) use G9 capsule bulbs, up to 10W per position. The Melville sphere single pendant uses an E27 lamp socket, taking up to 20W (recommended: LED GLS A60 or ST64 filament). No bulbs are included with any Melville fitting. G9 LED capsule bulbs and E27 filament lamps are available separately from Harbro Electrical.
Are Melville brass pendant lights dimmable?
Are Melville brass pendant lights dimmable?
Yes. All Melville pendants are dimmable, but require both dimmable lamps and a compatible dimmer switch. Neither is included with the fitting. For the G9 round pendants, install dimmable G9 LED capsule bulbs. For the E27 sphere pendant, use a dimmable GLS or filament LED. Confirm compatibility with your chosen dimmer before purchasing lamps.
What ceiling height do I need for a brass pendant light?
What ceiling height do I need for a brass pendant light?
Pendant lights work best in rooms with at least 2.4m ceiling height. Over a dining table or kitchen island, the bottom of the fitting should sit 700mm to 900mm above the surface. The Melville 40cm round pendant has a minimum drop of 400mm and a maximum drop of 1,690mm, giving significant adjustability for different ceiling heights and placement positions.
What is the difference between the clear, smoked and amber glass options?
What is the difference between the clear, smoked and amber glass options?
Clear glass gives the most light output and a sharp, contemporary look. Smoked glass reduces glare and produces a more diffused, atmospheric light quality suited to dining and living rooms. Amber glass casts the warmest glow, complements the brass frame and works particularly well with filament-style LED bulbs. The brass frame design is identical across all three glass options.
