About BT1 White

BT1 White Sealant: What It Is and When to Use It

BT1 White is the opaque white variant of C-Tec's BT1 sanitary sealant and adhesive. The formulation is identical to BT1 Clear: a unique TRIBRID Polymer compound that is solvent free, isocyanate free and silicone free, clinically proven to reduce bacteria by up to 99.99%, and ETAG022 certified for bonding shower panels without mechanical fixings. The difference is purely the finish. BT1 White produces an opaque white bead that blends into white tile grout and standard white bathroom fittings.

BT1 is an anti-bacterial sanitary sealant and adhesive made by C-Tec, the British manufacturer behind CT1. Where CT1 is a general-purpose product designed to bond and seal almost anything, BT1 is purpose-built for bathrooms, kitchens and any wet area where hygiene matters. Its unique TRIBRID Polymer formula creates a surface on which bacteria and microbes physically cannot survive. That is not a marketing claim. BT1 is independently tested under MOD ISO 22196:2011 and clinically proven to reduce bacteria by up to 99.99%, with confirmed effectiveness against MRSA, E. coli and Campylobacter.

The practical consequence is that BT1 joints do not go black. Standard silicone sealants in showers and around baths typically begin to discolour within 12 to 18 months as mould colonises the surface. BT1 prevents that from happening in the first place. For a plumber, bathroom fitter or refurb contractor, this is the difference between a five-year installation that still looks right and one that the customer calls back about within two years.

BT1 is also not a silicone. It is solvent free, isocyanate free and silicone free, which means it is odourless and safe to use in enclosed spaces. It holds the GEV EMICODE EC1 Plus certification for very low emissions, complies with BREEAM, LEED and WELL environmental standards, and is ISEGA certified for use in food preparation and cold storage areas. It is ETAG022 approved for bonding shower panels to walls without mechanical fixings, which cuts installation time and removes the need for drilling into tiled surfaces.

Where to Use It

Applications and Compatible Surfaces

BT1 works in any wet or hygiene-critical environment and bonds to most building substrates without primer.

Where BT1 is used

  • Shower trays and shower panels
  • Around baths and basins
  • Kitchen worktops and splashbacks
  • Wet rooms
  • Hospitals and clinical environments
  • Public washrooms
  • Food preparation areas
  • Cold storage and refrigeration seals
  • Changing rooms and leisure facilities
  • Any joint where mould resistance matters

Surfaces BT1 bonds to

  • Ceramic and porcelain tile
  • Glass and mirror
  • Wood and MDF
  • Metals (including lead)
  • Cement and concrete
  • Marble, granite and natural stone
  • Fibreglass
  • Polystyrene
  • uPVC and most plastics
  • PP, PE and PTFE: not compatible

BT1 is not suitable for use on surfaces containing polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE) or PTFE. On powder-coated aluminium, check with the coating manufacturer first. For all other surfaces, no primer is needed and BT1 will bond and seal even in damp or wet conditions.

Application Guide

How to Apply BT1 Sealant

  1. Prepare the surface

Remove all old sealant and adhesive residue. Clean the surfaces thoroughly and allow them to dry. Both surfaces must be clean and free of dust, grease and loose particles for BT1 to bond correctly. C-Tec's MultiSolve is ideal for the degreasing step.

  2. Prepare the cartridge

Remove the nozzle cap. Cut the nozzle tip at a 45-degree angle using a sharp knife. The cut position determines your bead diameter, so cut further back for a wider bead. Load the prepared cartridge into a standard caulk gun and test the flow on a scrap surface.

  3. Apply in a continuous bead

Work steadily along the joint in one pass. Hold the gun at a consistent angle and apply even pressure for a uniform bead. Avoid stopping and starting mid-joint if possible, as this can create weak points or visible breaks in the finished seal.

  4. Tool off and leave to cure

Smooth the bead within a few minutes of application using a wet finger or a caulk tool. BT1 skins over in approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Allow a full 24 hours before exposing the joint to water. Do not disturb the joint during the cure period.

Frequently Asked

BT1 White: Common Questions

What is BT1 sealant?

BT1 is an anti-bacterial TRIBRID Polymer sanitary sealant and adhesive made by C-Tec, the British manufacturer behind CT1. It is clinically proven to reduce bacteria by up to 99.99% and has been tested against MRSA, E. coli and Campylobacter. Supplied as a 290ml cartridge, it is solvent free, isocyanate free and silicone free, and is designed for bathrooms, kitchens and any area where mould resistance and hygiene are the priority.

What is the difference between BT1 and CT1?

CT1 is C-Tec's general-purpose TRIBRID sealant and adhesive, suitable for almost any bonding or sealing job across construction, plumbing, joinery and general trade use. BT1 is the bathroom and kitchen-specific version, with an anti-bacterial formulation engineered to prevent mould and bacterial growth on the joint surface. Both use TRIBRID Polymer technology, but BT1 adds the anti-bacterial element that makes it the right choice wherever hygiene is critical. For everything else, CT1 is the go-to product.

Is BT1 a silicone sealant?

No. BT1 is a TRIBRID Polymer product, not a silicone. It is silicone free, solvent free and isocyanate free. This gives it substantially better mould resistance and long-term durability compared with standard sanitary silicones, which typically discolour and require replacement within 12 to 24 months in wet environments.

Can BT1 bond shower panels without mechanical fixings?

Yes. BT1 is ETAG022 certified for the installation and sealing of bathroom waterproof panelling. This means it is independently approved for bonding shower panels to walls without mechanical fixings. The certification reduces installation time, avoids drilling into tiled walls and produces a cleaner finish. BT1 will maintain this bond even in continuous wet and warm conditions.

How long does BT1 take to dry?

BT1 skins over in around 20 to 30 minutes under normal indoor conditions. Full cure typically takes 24 hours before the joint should be exposed to water. Cure time may be longer in cold temperatures or very dry conditions. Do not disturb the joint during this period and check the product data sheet for the specific variant you are using.

Will BT1 prevent mould growth?

Yes. BT1's TRIBRID Polymer formula creates a surface on which bacteria and microbes cannot survive. It has been independently tested under MOD ISO 22196:2011 and proven to reduce bacteria by up to 99.99%, including MRSA, E. coli and Campylobacter. Unlike standard silicone, BT1 does not go black or require periodic re-sealing due to mould ingress.

What colours does BT1 come in?

BT1 is available in three colours: Clear (transparent), White and Pale Grey. Harbro Electrical stocks the Clear 290ml cartridge. Contact the trade counter on 0191 518 1998 for current availability on the White and Pale Grey variants.
