Hardwired Doorbell Kit
What the Byron 720K Is
The Byron 720K is a complete hardwired doorbell kit containing everything needed for a new hardwired installation: the electro-mechanical Classic Doorbell chime, a White bell push, an 8V 1A transformer, bell wire, cable clips, a fixing pack and an instruction manual. At £17.25 + VAT there is nothing else to purchase. The transformer is matched to the chime - correct voltage, correct current rating, no compatibility to check.
A hardwired doorbell is powered by a low-voltage bell circuit: the transformer steps mains voltage down to 8V AC, which travels via 2-core bell wire to both the push and the chime. When the push is pressed it completes the circuit and the electro-mechanical chime produces its traditional ding-dong. No batteries, no wireless signal, no Wi-Fi, no app and no ongoing dependencies. Byron is one of the best-established doorbell brands in the UK; the 720K is the definitive no-frills, reliable hardwired doorbell kit.
The 720K is the right product for new-build installs, refurbishments and straight replacements where the requirement is a reliable, permanent hardwired doorbell without video or smart features. Where a hardwired video doorbell is needed, the Dahua VDKP01-BG and Ener-J Smart Flexi are the hardwired video options at Harbro.

Installation Guide
How to Install the Byron 720K Hardwired Doorbell
A standard 2-wire bell circuit installation. The transformer step requires a qualified electrician. The bell wire runs and terminal connections are low-voltage work.
-
Install the transformer (qualified electrician required)
Mount the 8V 1A transformer in a suitable location - typically inside a cupboard, loft or consumer unit enclosure near the mains supply. Connect the transformer primary to the mains supply via a suitable fused spur. This step must be carried out by a qualified electrician. The transformer secondary outputs 8V AC, which powers the low-voltage bell circuit.
-
Run bell wire from transformer to push button
Run 2-core bell wire from the transformer secondary terminals to the outdoor bell push position. The bell wire can be surface-clipped using the included cable clips or chased into the wall for a concealed run. Mark or label the ends of the wire at the push position before proceeding to the next run.
-
Run bell wire from transformer to chime
Run a second length of 2-core bell wire from the transformer secondary terminals to the indoor chime position - typically in the hallway. The two bell wire runs create a simple series circuit: transformer to push, push to chime, chime back to transformer. All conductors carry 8V AC - safe to handle during installation.
-
Connect push, chime and transformer terminals
Connect the bell wire ends to the terminals on the push button, the chime unit and the transformer secondary per the wiring diagram in the instruction manual. Wall-mount the chime in the chosen position using the included fixings. Mount the bell push outside the front door. Test by pressing the push to verify the chime sounds. Adjust chime volume if required.

Frequently Asked
Byron 720K Hardwired Doorbell: Common Questions
What is a hardwired doorbell?
A hardwired doorbell uses a low-voltage bell circuit to connect the outdoor push button to the indoor chime via 2-core bell wire. A doorbell transformer steps mains voltage (230V AC) down to the voltage required by the bell - typically 8V AC. When the push is pressed it completes the circuit and the chime sounds. Hardwired doorbells have no batteries to replace and no wireless signal to drop - they are the most reliable long-term doorbell solution and the standard for new-build and refurbishment installs. The Byron 720K includes everything needed for a complete hardwired doorbell installation in a single kit.
Does the Byron 720K include everything I need?
Yes. The 720K includes the Classic Doorbell chime, White bell push, 8V 1A transformer, bell wire, cable clips, fixing pack and instruction manual. No separate transformer purchase is required - this is one of the few hardwired doorbell kits on the market where the transformer is included in the box. The only additional requirement is a suitable mains connection point for the transformer, which must be installed by a qualified electrician.
What voltage transformer does a hardwired doorbell need?
The Byron 720K includes an 8V 1A transformer matched to its chime. Most standard residential hardwired doorbells operate at 8V AC. Larger electro-mechanical chimes with louder output or more tone options may require 12V AC. Using the Byron 720K kit as supplied removes any compatibility uncertainty - the transformer and chime are factory-matched. If a different chime is required, additional doorbell transformers are available separately at Harbro.
Does a hardwired doorbell require an electrician?
The transformer installation - connecting it to the mains supply - requires a qualified electrician. Once the transformer is installed, running the 2-core bell wire from the transformer to the push position and from the transformer to the chime position, and connecting the terminals, is low-voltage work that a competent DIYer can complete using the included instructions. The bell wire operates at 8V AC from the transformer and does not require certification work.
What is the difference between a hardwired doorbell and a wireless doorbell?
A hardwired doorbell uses bell wire between the push, transformer and chime. It requires a cable run but has no batteries to replace, no wireless signal to drop and no ongoing dependencies. A wireless doorbell uses a radio signal between push and chime - faster to install but requiring periodic battery replacement. For new builds and full refurbishments with cable access, a hardwired doorbell is the more reliable permanent solution. For retrofit installs where cable routing is not viable, a wireless doorbell is the practical choice.
What sound does the Byron 720K make?
The Byron 720K has an electro-mechanical chime that produces a traditional two-tone ding-dong at up to 85dB. A mechanical striker hits two separate notes in sequence when the push button is pressed - the same classic sound associated with traditional hardwired bell circuits. There is no ringtone selection; the 720K produces a single, consistent ding-dong sound. For multiple ringtone options, the wireless Knightsbridge DC010 offers 58 selectable tones.
Can I use the Byron 720K transformer with a different chime?
Yes, provided the replacement chime is rated for 8V AC operation. The 8V 1A transformer from the 720K kit is a standard doorbell transformer and will power any bell circuit component rated at 8V AC. If a chime requiring 12V AC is needed, a separate 12V transformer is required from the Doorbell Transformer collection.
