What the LSMC14M-SP Is and What It Includes
The Live Electrical LSMC14M-SP is a fully metal consumer unit with 11 useable circuit ways, pre-populated with 9 Type A 30mA RCBOs, a pre-fitted 20/40kA double pole SPD and a 100A double pole main switch. At £124.71 + VAT it is a complete consumer unit package ready for connection: no separate SPD purchase, no separate RCBO fitting, no missing devices to source before the board goes live.
The metal construction satisfies the BS 7671:2018 Amendment 3 requirement for non-combustible consumer unit enclosures in domestic premises. The pre-fitted SPD satisfies the Amendment 2 requirement for surge protection in most new domestic and commercial installations. The pre-loaded RCBOs are Type A, meaning they detect both sinusoidal AC and pulsating DC earth fault currents - the correct specification for modern installations including EV charger circuits and circuits with electronic loads.
The enclosure measures 316mm (W) x 270mm (H) x 110mm (D), finished in white RAL 9010 powder coat. Circular cable entry knockouts are provided at the top and bottom. An earth terminal bar is pre-fitted. A tails gland and grommet strip are included. Two of the 11 useable ways are fitted with blank fillers, leaving two free ways for additional devices where the installation design requires them.

Why a metal consumer unit?
BS 7671:2018 Amendment 3 requires consumer units installed in domestic premises to have enclosures manufactured from non-combustible material. This requirement followed evidence that arc faults developing inside plastic consumer unit enclosures had contributed to house fires, with the plastic enclosure allowing fire to spread rather than containing it. A metal enclosure contains any arc fault within the board. The LSMC14M-SP is fully metal construction throughout - enclosure, drop-down cover and lid.
Why an SPD?
BS 7671:2018 Amendment 2 (2022) requires surge protection devices in most new electrical installations where the consequences of equipment damage from a transient overvoltage would exceed the cost of the SPD. In practice this covers the majority of new domestic and commercial installations where electronic equipment, connected devices and EV charging infrastructure are present. A 20/40kA double pole Type 2 SPD satisfies this requirement. Having the SPD pre-fitted in the consumer unit removes the need for a separate purchase and ensures the SPD is installed correctly in relation to the main incoming supply.
Why Type A RCBOs rather than Type AC?
All nine pre-installed RCBOs are Type A, which detects both sinusoidal AC and pulsating DC earth fault currents. Modern electronic loads including EV chargers, PV inverters, LED drivers and switch-mode power supplies can produce pulsating DC fault currents during an earth fault. BS 7671:2018 Amendment 2 requires Type A protection for circuits supplying such equipment. Using Type A RCBOs throughout the board future-proofs the installation against the growing prevalence of electronic loads on domestic circuits.

Can I add more RCBOs to the LSMC14M-SP?
Yes. The two blank ways accept additional Live Electrical AMR B-030 Type A RCBOs in any available amperage - 6A, 10A, 16A, 20A, 32A or 40A. The pre-installed RCBOs can also be swapped for different amperages if the installation design requires a different circuit configuration. All Live Electrical AMR B-030 RCBOs are available individually from Harbro at £8.19 + VAT per device.
What does DP mean on the main switch and SPD?
DP stands for double pole. A double pole device switches both the line and neutral conductors simultaneously. A double pole main switch fully isolates both conductors when operated, which is the required configuration for consumer unit main isolators under BS 7671. The double pole SPD provides surge protection across both line and neutral. Some older consumer units use single pole main switches, which leave the neutral conductor connected during isolation - not the current compliant specification for new installations.
Does the LSMC14M-SP need to be installed by an electrician?
Yes. Consumer unit installation involves connection to the mains supply tails and is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales. It must be carried out by a qualified electrician registered with a competent person scheme (NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA or equivalent), or notified to the local building control authority.
