What This RCBO Is and Why Type A Matters
The Live Electrical AMR B-030 is a Type A single module RCBO available in six amperage ratings: 6A, 10A, 16A, 20A, 32A and 40A. At £8.19 + VAT it is priced for trade volume use. All amperages share the same specification: B Curve, 30mA residual current, 6kA breaking capacity, 230V AC, BS EN 61009-1 certified and switched neutral as standard.
The Type A classification is the key differentiator from standard Type AC RCBOs. A Type AC RCBO detects sinusoidal AC residual currents only. A Type A RCBO detects both sinusoidal AC residual currents and pulsating DC residual currents. Modern electronic loads including EV chargers, solar PV inverters, variable frequency drives and LED drivers can produce pulsating DC fault currents that a Type AC device may not detect reliably. The 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations (Amendment 2, BS 7671:2018+A2:2022) require Type A protection for circuits supplying such equipment. Using this RCBO on these circuits satisfies that requirement in a single module width.
Switched neutral as standard means both line and neutral conductors are switched simultaneously when the device trips. This guarantees that a faulted circuit is fully isolated and that healthy circuits remain unaffected. On high-integrity installations this is the specified configuration.

Per-circuit protection: why RCBO beats MCB + RCD
Where a consumer unit uses a single RCD covering multiple circuits, a fault on any one circuit trips the RCD and takes down all circuits downstream of it - including circuits with no fault. An RCBO on each circuit means only the faulted circuit trips. Essential in high-integrity installations, mandatory in high-risk locations and increasingly standard practice on new domestic work. What does B Curve mean on an RCBO?
B Curve is the instantaneous magnetic trip characteristic. A B Curve RCBO trips instantaneously on short circuit at 3 to 5 times the rated current. This suits most domestic and light commercial circuits with resistive and lightly inductive loads - lighting, socket outlets, general appliances. C Curve (5 to 10 times rated current) is used for circuits with higher inrush currents such as motors, transformers and some commercial equipment. Where the design calls for a B Curve Type A RCBO, the Live Electrical AMR B-030 is the correct device.
What does 30mA mean on an RCBO?
30mA is the rated residual operating current - the earth fault current at which the device will trip to protect against electric shock. BS 7671 requires 30mA RCD protection for socket outlet circuits (where sockets are likely to be used with equipment outdoors), circuits in bathrooms and shower rooms, circuits in high-risk locations, and circuits supplying EV chargers. A 30mA device will trip within 40 milliseconds at 30mA and within 300 milliseconds at 15mA, providing effective protection against indirect contact with live conductors.
Does a Type A RCBO need to be fitted by an electrician?
Yes. Installation involves working inside a consumer unit or distribution board, which is work on or near live conductors and is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales. It must be carried out by a qualified electrician registered with a competent person scheme (such as NICEIC, NAPIT or ELECSA), or notified to the local building control authority.
