About FC1
What FC1 Is and Why It Replaces Standard Decorating Caulk
FC1 is C-Tec's all-in-one decorators filler and caulk. Standard decorating caulks use simple acrylic formulas that shrink, go brittle and crack over time, particularly at movement joints like skirtings, door frames and coving where the structure flexes. FC1 uses an advanced acrylic elastomer formulation that stays permanently flexible, moving with the joint rather than fighting it. Once applied, it will not crack, shrink or slump.
The practical advantage on a decorating job is speed. FC1 dries fast enough to paint over with water-based paints in as little as one hour, which means apply, tool off and paint in a single session without waiting for the caulk to cure overnight. The finish is ultra-smooth and requires no sanding, so there is no extra preparation step between caulking and painting.
FC1 also replaces separate filler and caulk products. It fills gaps up to 25mm in a single application without slumping, which covers everything from hairline cracks to the kind of gaps that appear where skirtings have been pulled away from an uneven wall. The same cartridge handles filling at cornices and coving, sealing around door linings and architraves, and topping off gaps at window sills, all without switching products mid-job.
Where to Use It

- Not for constant water immersion (use BT1)
- Not below 5 degrees C
FC1 is formulated for dry interior decorating environments. It is not suitable for areas of constant water immersion such as shower surrounds or submerged joints. For bathrooms and kitchen wet areas, use BT1 instead. For very large gaps above 25mm, use a foam backer rod before applying FC1 as the finishing layer.
Application Guide
How to Apply FC1 Decorators Caulk
-
Prepare the surface
Clean the joint area and ensure both surfaces are dry, dust-free and free from loose material or old filler. Remove any previous caulk that is cracked, lifting or contaminated. FC1 should not be applied in temperatures below 5 degrees C or onto frozen or frost-affected surfaces.
-
Cut the nozzle and load the gun
Cut the nozzle tip at a 45-degree angle. The position of the cut determines the bead width, so cut closer to the tip for a narrow joint, further back for a wider gap. Load the 310ml cartridge into a standard caulk gun and run a test bead on a spare surface before working on the job.
-
Apply in a continuous bead
Hold the gun at a consistent angle and work along the joint in one steady pass. FC1 will not slump in gaps up to 25mm, so apply confidently at a consistent speed. For deep gaps, a single pass is sufficient. Do not overfill, as excess product will need to be removed before tooling.
-
Tool off, then paint
Smooth the bead with a damp finger or caulk finisher. Wipe any excess cleanly away with a damp cloth. FC1 can be painted with water-based paints in as little as one hour. No sanding is required between application and painting. Allow full cure before applying solvent-based paints.

Frequently Asked
FC1 Decorators Caulk: Common Questions
What is FC1?
FC1 is an all-in-one decorators filler and caulk made by C-Tec, the British manufacturer behind CT1 and BT1. Formulated with advanced acrylic elastomer technology, FC1 seals and fills gaps between skirtings, architraves, door frames, coving and window sills in preparation for painting or papering. It is permanently flexible, will not crack, requires no sanding, and can be painted with water-based paints in as little as one hour.
What is the difference between FC1 and standard decorating caulk?
Standard decorating caulks use simple acrylic formulas that can shrink, go brittle and crack over time, particularly at movement joints where the structure flexes. FC1 uses advanced acrylic elastomer technology that stays permanently flexible. It also dries faster than most caulks, requires no sanding, fills gaps up to 25mm without slumping, and replaces both filler and caulk in a single product.
How long before you can paint over FC1?
FC1 can be painted with water-based paints in as little as one hour, depending on the depth of product applied and ambient conditions. For solvent-based paints, allow FC1 to fully cure before painting. In cold or high-humidity conditions the drying time will be longer than one hour.
Can FC1 be used in bathrooms or wet areas?
No. FC1 is a decorating product formulated for dry interior environments. It is not suitable for areas of constant water immersion such as shower surrounds, bath edges or kitchen sink joints. For those applications use BT1, which is C-Tec's anti-bacterial sanitary sealant specifically designed for permanent wet conditions.
What is the maximum gap FC1 can fill?
FC1 fills gaps up to 25mm in a single application without slumping. For gaps wider than 25mm, install a foam backer rod into the gap first, then apply FC1 over it as the finishing layer. This gives the FC1 a solid backing to bond to and prevents the product from sinking into a very wide or deep void.
Does FC1 need sanding after application?
No. FC1 has an ultra-smooth finish that does not require sanding. Once tooled off cleanly with a damp finger or caulk tool, the surface is ready to paint or paper without any further preparation.
What surfaces can FC1 be used on?
FC1 bonds to wood, MDF, plaster, plasterboard, brick, stone, concrete, PVC, painted metals and anodised or lacquered aluminium. It is not suitable for areas of constant water immersion, or application below 5 degrees C. On bare untreated non-porous metals, prime the surface first before applying.
